Presided up to the last by a retired colonel, a former student of Marshal Pétain, the French Legion of Combatants of Corsica counted about 20 000 members at the end of 1941. For nearly two years, it dominated public life thanks to support from authorities although without a solid local political base. Anti-Semitic, Anglophobic, it went on to pronounce pro-German language in 1942 which contributed to its disrepute. It was only, however, on a personal level that some of its leaders were to answer for their acts after the Liberation.
