The Ostrogoth king Theodoric (493-526) took advantage of the new political circumstances that emerged in Gaul after the Battle of Vouillé (507) to seize hold of Provence in order to protect Italy from Frankish expansion. He also benefited from it to create a great Visigoth-Ostrogoth kingdom including Spain, southern Gaul and Italy. Provence was a decisive territorial stake in controlling this vast area. The Ostrogoths considered Provence as an element of equilibrium between their kingdom and that of the Franks, both of them seeking hegemony and being dangerously rivals. We will examine the organization and the administration of the again Roman Provincia thanks, notably, to a body of documents emanating from the Ravenna chancellery and contained in Cassiodore's Variae. We will study the reciprocal evolution of the cities of Marseille and Arles in the Ostrogoth period of the Great Prefecture as well as the role of two major actors of the Ostrogoth Peace, the prefect Liberius and the bishop Cesar Of Arles.
