Research themes


Created in 2008, the Arts, Sociétés, Patrimoine (Arts, Society and Heritage) aims to discuss History of Art through a study of our society and heritage. The question of Art Sociology allows us to rethink our existing research and use newer methods. Consequently our work does not rely exclusively on tried historical and scientific fields, but also aims to relate to contemporary research themes. The inestimable value of our heritage (Patrimoine) is the motivation for all our teams, and is studied regionally, nationally and internationally. We are working closely with several museums and the Inventory of the Midi-Pyrenees Region, with the National Institute of History of Art (INHA) and with Spanish universities and institutions for joint Research programs.

Several workshops structure our research that builds up to our annually held seminars. These are organised monthly with the active participation of Master and PhD students, who also organize their own seminars that collate our ongoing work, giving coherence and reflexion to our work.

 

Workshop "Cross pollination with Spain


The work of Marcel Durliat in medieval art as well as those of Paul Guinard in modern art is inextricably linked to the University of Toulouse in artistic research on the Iberian Peninsula. In this spirit, and in conjunction with the Casa
Velazquez, study days are held in Toulouse with Spanish colleagues for, initially, to assess the historical/geographical question of artistic and cultural influences across the Pyrenees. Architecture (November 2007), Sculpture (March 2008) and then Paintings will inaugurate this annual cycle. In this perspective there will be co-supervision with the Universities of Barcelona, Girona, Valencia and Zaragoza allowing the implementation of background research and the development of close collaboration. In 2010 a conference will be held at the Casa de Velázquez entitled "Architecture and the Polychrome in Renaissance Spain, Portugal, Italy, France.

Sculpture workshop

 

This workshop is devoted to the vast field of sculpture from medieval times through the modern to the contemporary, which has as yet been little studied in a transverse method. Comparison of methods and aims of the team members attached to these different periods can enrich the approach to this art. The annual seminars will bring together French and foreign researchers discussing this issue and giving priority to work on shortage of reading material, and the lack of appreciation or conceptualization. TRACES will cover the Medieval period.

For the modern period, two days will be spent in conjunction with the C.E.S.R. of Tours (UMR 6576-Université François Rabelais) on "Sculpture in its relationship with the Arts." A day will be held at Tours and another in Toulouse. Reflections on sculpture of this period in relation to literature, architecture, drawing or painting aim to understand the phenomenon of interaction which makes its specificity.

After "Text and Sculpture" (2007) and "Sculpture and Architecture" (2008) is "Sculpture and Graphic Arts" (2009) and "Sculpture and Painting" (2010) ... held in Paris and Troyes in June 2009, in collaboration with the INHA, a symposium on "The French sculpture of the Renaissance."

Finally, several Master and PhD students are working on the heritage value of sculpture in their regions.

Workshop "Methods and materials: in the Ancien Régime work shop"


This program is designated to the activities in workshops of painters, sculptors and architects. Two areas are particularly explored: firstly the economic, sociological and cultural life of a workshop, in juxtaposition, to the concept of schools or artists studios as interpreted by art historians. From the analysis of works such as graphics and manuscripts, many fields are discussed, such as diversity and evolution of the vocabulary attached to places or practices, responsibilities of members of the workshop/studio (the master, the apprentice to the position of women), skills (legal, technical), networks (family, guilds, trade), or the relationship between workshops and worksites/building sites. Finally, the question of associations, regional identities, local talents and skills, available helpers which might have been construed as schools and their value will be the scope of our research.
These themes are further discussed during study days focusing on work in France but also in Spain, Flanders and Italy. A chronological framework, from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, has been chosen for the first seminars (2008-2011).

Parochial and rural art workshop

The conclusions from our recent seminars on "parochial art", show that artistic creation in rural areas is still today an area, relatively unexplored by Historians of art; where monographic or thematic studies on the religious heritage are many, studies are rare for those who seek to understand the interactions between the parochial world, its number of creators, clients, local "spectators" and the works found in churches.

The meetings held since 2006 at the University of Toulouse II, with the assistance of FRAMESPA, and of the Department of Art History and the UFR, give a new perspective to Parochial Art. By reflecting, and studying collectively, the survey opens up new lines of thought, inviting researches from different areas to un-compartmentalizing disciplines. These studies bring together art historians, historians, anthropologists and curators on this theme of innovative artistic production of rural parishes. The debate over creation in the villages has addressed the sources of inspiration for Art in the Parish (2006), Artistic Cultural Priests in rural areas, the fifteenth-nineteenth century (2008),Portraits of Churchmen in the French countryside (2009). Working days are being prepared on the subject of Devotional works in the sixteenth-nineteenth century study (2010). A symposium will be organized in 2011 on the Ugly, bizarre and the obscene in the art of churches and the extent of creative workshops in rural areas (sixteenth-eighteenth centuries).

Workshop on Heritage and artistic life in the regions


This workshop, devoted to the study of artistic creation in the regions is attempting to broaden the traditional thinking of art history by opening political and sociological approaches. It will clarify the ideological context of works produced largely by taking into account the upstream and downstream of their creation (the circumstances of the commissions, develop a discourse of images, how it was received, etc...). To do this, we will prepare a geographical assessment from recent work. Another dimension of the project will extend the reviewed period to the contemporary. Indeed, for the contemporary period, the notion of artistic life in the country is often confined to the nineteenth and twentieth century sources. This new approach should analyse the changes, and perhaps make them permanent. Seeking to understand how to reformulate the researched works in conjunction with a local or regional identity is one of the important questions we will try to answer.

Workshop "Practical Art after 1945


We felt it necessary to propose a workshop of art history, from 1945 to today, because the research methods and accessibility to archives and documents are different compared to earlier centuries. In addition, the moment of creation arouses many research vocations among students. In this workshop, the approach will be essentially thematic. Examples of subjects: the question of the hybrid (multi-faceted) in contemporary art forms and changes in contemporary sculpture (study days on these topics are already planned or in preparation). The research will draw on the sources available in the region, but not be limited to a particular geographical area. It is rather to an international horizon that we turn, more specifically, modern British art, which will occupy an important place in this workshop.

Workshop "Texts on art theory, criticism, historiography"


In Western Society commentary usually accompanies the art, this offers the Art Historian a unique line of research. All three types of messages considered in the context of this workshop being, art theory, art criticism and art history can be studied for themselves. But read them together and it gives the opportunity to chart the evolution of taste over time, and offers a whole new horizon of expectations for audiences to understand. Also, the number of writings on art within the defined area of study here contribute to a genre, increasingly important, as are the writings of artists.

In their diversity, these texts belong to both the theory of art criticism, but are also comments on the history of the contemporary artist who often become their very first, very attentive historiographer.

The art historians should not neglect to address these sources amongst themselves but also art's relationship to philosophy, history and other literary genres (poetry, novels, plays ...). The purpose of this workshop is necessarily multidisciplinary.
