This work has no other objective than to formulate a set of reflections on territorial organization in the northwestern part of the Iberian peninsula. To accomplish this task, four questions of different nature are asked. First, it is a question of vocabulary used in sources to designate a complex network of changing territorial districts, a network that changed in time and space (between the 8th and 10th centuries in the area between the Duero Valley and the Cantabrian Sea). Next, what are the historiographical interpretations which have been made in order to seize the signification of the realities behind this panel of words? In a third time, the article analyzes three examples that, in appearance, at least, suggest different models of territorial organization. These examples are borrowed from the Galician, Leonais and Castilian contexts. The article finishes by making several suggestions that have no other ambition than to attract our attention to certain questions and to signal several seemingly under explored paths.
