The Marquis of Méjanes' rich book collection, bequeathed to the province of Provence in 1786, gave birth to the municipal library of Aix-en-Provence, which did not open, however, until 1810. The 18th century is at Aix a century of projects more than of successes. The gifts of the barrister André Tournon and the the apothecary Margaillan (1705 and 1707), of the historian de Haitze (1728), of the Duke of Villars and of the war commissary Lenfant (1765), as well as the project of the barrister Chaix (1742) encountered the reserves or the indifference of municipal or provincial authorities. The donation of the Marquis de Méjanes took place in an unfavourable political and financial context ; the library would not have survived without the energy exerted by the librarian Gibelin.
